| Here you'll find movies with dyke appeal, as defined by Dyxploitation readers, and/or myself. This is not in any way a complete list. You are invited to post your choices in the Forum, and to discuss them there. Movie reviews will be archived on this page. (This is a lot easier than having me post them up here, and the new ones will always be at the top of the list.) |

| Aimee and Jaguar. it's about dykes in Berlin during WWII. Good movie, funny but kind of sad. Gita |
All Over Me (1997)
One of my very favorite movies about a girl who falls in love with her best
friend in NYC. How many times have we heard that story before? Somehow this
film manages to portray the friendship so that you can really feel both sides
of the story, and feel the frustration of the main character Claude (Alison
Folland). For most of the movie, Claude is battling with her feelings for
Ellen (Tara Subkoff), but also trying to understand Ellen's newfound drug
addiction and her obsession with her homophobic boyfriend. Aside from
Claude's coming out to herself, it shows a friendship that is degrading
because of the changes of growing up and the choices the two girls make. The
filming is great with the splits between Claude & Ellens' parallel (yet so
different) activities, and there are some very sweet scenes between Leisha
Hailey (from the Murmurs) and Claude. Not to mention the great soundtrack
full of female artists!

All over Me (1997) - Nice coming of age film, well acted by Alison Folland. Kim |
![]() Antonia's Line(1995) - Definitely go rent Marleen Gorris' movie (which won the Oscar for best foreign film). Excellent multiple generations of women, including a really cute woman who figures out her own way to get pregnant, and later falls in love with her daughter's school-marm. Once nice sex scene ... Life, love, lesbianism -- who could ask for more?-- lq |
| Bad Girls Go To Hell (1966) - This might be more accurately titled Stupid Girls Go To Hell because the protagonist is so incredibly stupid and passive. Regarded as idiot savant Doris Wishman's masterpiece, it's a no-budget roughie about an unfortunate woman whose life takes one shit turn after another. The only sympathetic character is a dyke who spends a lot of time lounging on her couch in a stretch lace body suit. This film demonstrates Wishman's patented technique of showing the listener of a conversation or the back of the head of the talker. That way her movies could be shot silent and the dialog added later without pesky lip-synching. Wishman's not a feminist by anyone's definition, nor is she politically aware. But she is a genuine nut who made indy movies at a time when there weren't any other women doing it. |
Better Than Chocolate (1999) - This lighthearted Canadian fim features two
unknown actresses, one a beautiful red haired girl having issues with her
mother, the other a cute, butch, traveling artist. Trouble begins when the
mother, bringing her sixteen year old son, shows up unexpectedly. The red
haired girl pretends her girlfriend is just a friend, putting stress on their
fledgling relationship. Meanwhile, her adolescent brother comes into his own
with the ever-horny bisexual girl. Her older, butcher boss is hit on by
their mutal transexual lesbian friend. And all the while they fight
censorship and oppression. This cute romantic comedy leaves you with a good
feeling. The sex scenes are short but graphic. Be sure to see the unrated
version. esthappenI thought it should be said that the book store in the flick (10 percent) is based on the book store in vancouver (little sisters) which is in an ongoing fight over censorship. the fact that it is based on a true story adds something to it, i think. a lot of queer vancouverites were excited to be extras in this film for that very reason, myself included. benji |
| The Big Bird Cage (1971) - Pam Grier's a prisoner in a Phillipine camp where most of the inmates are Americans in minidresses with perfect hair and makeup. For much of the movie she's feuding with the big dyke (whose name I don't recall), but later on they forget their differences. This movie gets in on the streaking craze in a scene where the six foot tall dyke tries to escape by running nude through the jungle with chicken fat smeared on her body so that no one can grab her. |
![]() The Big Doll House (1971) - In Pam Grier's first big role, she plays a lesbian in a Phillipine prison camp named, creatively, Grier. Her first line, delivered while eyeing the new fish up and down, "Young, scared, and pretty!" Cute babes have food fights, chop sugar cane, and endure indignities till they can't take any more and revolt. |
The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant (1974) -
Only queer director Ranier Werner Fassbinder could make a movie consisting
almost entirely of dialogue and shot entirely in one room and come up with
a gripping, intensely memorable portrayal of a woman on the verge of
losing it. It's been described as an even bitchier, lesbian version of
"The Women", only a heck of a lot bleaker: fashion designer Petra falls in
love with her beautiful, calculating fashion model Karin (one of cinema's
ultimate lipstick lesbians), only to be emotionally destroyed by her in
the end Perhaps not a film to watch while you're in the throes of a
relationship breaking up, but there's the trademark Fassbinder
predilection for redemption during the final, devasting scene, and the
excellent performances (especially the sublime Hanna Schygulla as Karin)
throughout make this film worth the torment you might experience while
watching it. And if nothing else, Petra's wigs are fabulous. jOnnO (AdidasNYC@aol.com) |
Bound (1996) - I'm amazed no-one has listed this film yet, perhaps its too obvious a choice. You have to see it! Jennifer Tilley and Gina Gerswin play a mobster's mistress (Violet) and a seductive, tough-talking ex-con (Corky) who team up to bilk the mob (a bunch of brutal blokes) out of $2 million of laundered cash in this stylish, suspenseful erotic thriller. Dykes around the world are divided over which one they want to be or do. Make sure you get the "adult" version (I understand there is rated and unrated), as it has some truly fab lesbian sex which is no doubt censored out of the other one. Although a feature film directorial debut for apparently straight brothers Larry and Andy Wachowski, the "advisor" on the sex scenes was Susie Bright, and she really got it right! Congrats to the boys for listening to her. This film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, 1996. miranda
Bound What could possibly be more delicious than a lusty dyke plotting her escape from her cocky-ass, trigger-happy mob thug of boyfriend to escape a life of lies and deception? The same lusty dyke and her oh-so-naughty ex-con girlfriend taking him down, only to run off together with a nice little $2 million nest egg - tidily "laundered" by the thug himself. Score yet another for the sisterhood! - Cassandra Snow |
Boys Don't Cry - the true story of Teena Brandon, a girl facing a "sexual
identity crisis" who moves to Falls City, Nebraska and introduces herself as
a boy named Brandon Teena. She becomes popular with the folks in Falls City,
and even gets into a serious relationship with another girl (through the use
of strap-ons and such.) When her friends find out she's really a girl, they
brutally rape and murder her. Very very sad story ... even sadder when you
remember that it actually happened. Hilary Swank is *STUNNING* as Brandon.
She makes you fall in love with the character ... and your heart breaks when
Brandon dies. Not exactly a "feel good" movie, but perfect if you're in the
mood for an emotional, moving film. NotEveryGirl

The Bride with White Hair (1993) - Brigitte Lin is fantastic as misunderstood, murderous witch Ni-Chang, said to be the inspiration for the character Xena. She falls in love with swordsman Lian (Leslie Cheung), and they do a "steamy" love scene with as much chemistry between them as, say, Lily Tomlin and John Travolta in Moment By Moment. Soon afterwards, Lian betrays her, and she is falsely accused of wiping out his clan. This causes her hair to turn white and, not happy with her new look, she goes berserk. She embarks on a wild killing spree, while Lian heads for the hills to find a rare flower that will turn her sane again. Beautifully filmed, with fun fight sequences. |
The Bride with White
Hair 2 (1993) - In the sequel Ni-Chang is still at it and beyond all reason as she develops her killing powers to unheard of heights. For example, her hair can shoot out and stab people. As if that isn't enough, it also injects poison. She assembles an evil cult of women who join her in her murderous rampage. A group of swordsmen, including a cute butch girl played by Christy Chung, go up against her.
Meanwhile, Lian (Leslie Cheung) is still in the mountains, looking very gay. A convoluted plot, but when Brigitte Lin's on the screen who cares? |
Speaking of BRIGITTE LIN CHING HSIA,
well, most all of her other films are surely on my dyke appeal list, including her last appearance in
Chungking Express. (1994-Wong Kar Wai).True, this film is about 2 male, sad but
sweet, romantics in love with 2 very different, or very distant women, one
being chinese rocker FAYE WANG (soo cute:), and of course, the GLORIA-esque
brigitte lin as an HK hustler....i won't say anymore, simply because it's a
beautiful piece of torture for lin fans.....we never see her "face."
but, if you like HK babes, then
SEMI-GODS AND SEMI-DEVILS, parts 1 and 2, as well as THE FIREY DRAGON KID both star brigitte, as well as gong li and joey wang (respectively)...brigitte, once again, is playing god.....and regardless of which side she's batting for (guys/girls, good/bad)...she never fucking loses!!!!!! finally!! a bad bitch who gets everything she wants........almost:)....the all-too-cheesy-sexy credit sequences in SEMI parts 1 and 2 are worth waiting for........li and lin allllmmmmost kiss!!!!!! see all you can of lin's, because she's 'history.' however, the tarantino exposed "lin has quit" is a rumor, as cleared up by lin in a later interview....she just hasn't "found anything suitable yet.".....so what happens??? gong li does!!! enjoy those flicks...also catch her in the 80's dykey cut in PEKING OPERA BLUES,
and of course playing a MAN/WOMAN (eventually a transexual lesbian)
in parts 2 and 3 of the SWORDSMAN series called: THE SWORDSMAN PART 2, and The East Is Red.......cool cool cool.Amy |
But I'm a Cheerleader (2000) - A funny send-up the ridiculous Ex-Gay movement. The cheerleader of the title comes home to find her parents and a gang of ex-gays bent on intervention. Although she doesn't yet know she's a dyke, she's been exhibiting "tendancies." Soon she's sent off to ex-gay camp for corrective therapy. I hear that director Jamie Babbit had to cut this movie several times to get an R rating, which is unbelievable. I mean, she actually had to cut jokes out to get the R. What's left is still damn funny but someday I'd love to see a director's cut. |
Carnival of Souls (1962) - Candace Hilligoss plays a woman who goes off to a god-forsaken midwest town to take a job as a church organist. She moves into a rooming house with a moronic landlady and fends off advances from her fellow tenant, a drunken fool. She finds herself drawn to the abandoned amusement park outside of town. Soon, she's fired from the church for playing "unnatural" and "blasphemous" music, whereupon she gets even more alienated and suffers bouts of invisibility. The subtext is unintentional, but it's such a dyke allegory. |
| Carry On...Girls (1972, UK) Watch the interaction between women's lib leader Augusta Prodworthy (June Whitfield) and Rosemary (Patricia Franklin). Rosemary was obviously meant to be a sterotypical 1970's lesbian, and considering that Augusta has buried three husbands, I think she could be pursudaded... - Julie |
Chantilly Lace (1993) -
Well, you might have seen this one on SHOWTIME a few years back, but the
basic rundown is this: JO BETH WILLIAMS, JILL EIKENBERRY, MARTHA PLIMPTON, ALLEY SHEEDY, and co. all retreat to a vacation place in the mountains, and basically have a woman's BIG CHILL (funny, considering 2 of them are in THE BIG CHILL)....and yes....SHEEDY finds a love interest there (guess which one). it's cheesy-touching, but the very cool thing about this film, for a little bit of trivia, is that this group of actresses more or less performed this "script" like a play....which basically means, over half of the film was improv...now, some might say that's obvious when watching, but, for the soft heart in all of us....it
was pretty neat. might wanna have a tissue, if you're a softy (like me:).

| Claire of the Moon (1993) How vividly I recall driving into the city to see this film at Chicago's Music Box Theatre. I was a freshman in college at the time, eager to explore and to escape the confines of my conservative, middle-class, Midwestern upbringing.
Indeed, despite having received some of the most scathing reviews ever penned (and rightfully so), Claire of the Moon speaks to me, to this very day, as a symbol of possibility, passion, connection and a coming into one's own. Though lacking in the fine art of subtlety, the film's primary focus lies directly within the admittedly unconvincing relationship between novelist Claire Jabrowski (Trisha Todd) and psychoanalyst Dr. Noel Benedict (Karen Trumbo) as they are forced to share a cabin during a beach-side writer's retreat. Indeed, from the moment of their first meeting, Claire and Dr. Noel prove as incompatible as two women can be. Claire is straight with a penchant for meaningless sex and alcohol-induced romance. Dr. Noel, on the other hand, is as unbending and as uptight as they come. Though lesbian to the core, Dr. Noel's fear of intimacy, a subject upon which she expounds within her work, keeps her slave to her own inner-torment. Yet, once Claire and Dr. Noel develop a willingness to communicate, they soon discover the parallels within their lives and begin to realize that they just may be able to relate in some manner to the experience of the other. It isn't long then until both find themselves fantasizing scenarios in which an intimate encounter between them might play out. Cassandra Snow |
Coup de Foudre Aka: Entre Nous At First Sight; Between Us. French film 1983, by Diane Kurys, starring Isabelle Huppert and Miou-Miou: In 1942, a young Jewish woman, Lena, marries a French soldier, Michel, to avoid being deported to Germany. Meanwhile, another young woman, Madeleine gets married to an artist, Raymond. Ten years later, the two women meet at their children's school and find that they have a natural affinity for one another. They spend more time together and begin to make plans for the future. But as their friendship grows, the two women seem to drift further away from their husbands. Great actresses, the attraction between them is really hot - I just loved that they actually go off together... Lone

Catherine Deneuve films - There are two "Must See" for all lesbians.
These are The Hunger and Thieves (Les Voleurs). THE HUNGER was released in 1983. Deneuve's co-stars are David Bowie and Susan Sarandon. The bedroom scene with Deneuve and Sarandon is one of cinema's finest moments ever!
Thieves (Les Voleurs) is a French
sub-titled film released in 1996. Deneuve again plays a lesbian character. Includes a delightful bath scene with her co-star, Laurence Cote. Gina |
Desert Hearts - Late 30's Columbia University professor flees to Reno for a quicky
divorce in this lesbian classic set in the 1960's. Soon upon arrival,
she meets the owner's stepdaughter. Though the stepdaughter dates her
male supervisor at a casino, she is notorious for her sapphic trysts.
Eventually the professor succumbs to her desires, but the true fun is
the delicious sexual tension. Filmed in 1985, it has a wonderful appeal
to women discovering their lesbianism when they are too old to be baby
dykes. Jamie |
Desperate Living (1977) - This, the only early John Waters movie without Divine, tends to get overlooked, but it's one twisted fairy tale. Mortville, a shanty town and a haven for murderers on the run, is ruled over by despotic Queen Carlotta (Edith Massey). Ex-stripper Liz Renay stars as Muffy, the most beautiful woman in Mortville, who lives with her super-butch girlfriend Mole (Susan Lowe). When neurotic Peggy Gravel (Mink Stole) and her faithful maid Grizelda (Jean Hill) kill Peggy's husband, they flee to Mortville and rent a room from the couple. The dyke bar scenes are too funny. |
Dominique
Daughters of Lesbos (1967) - This was probably hot stuff back in the day. Now it's strictly for laughs. Vignettes of the life are strung together with non-stop hilarious voice-over comments. "A runaway flower child, seeking free love in the East Village," intones the narrator in her best Eartha Kitt imitation. Good for a party, especially if a lot of drinks are being served. After enough booze everyone will be talking like "Dominique." Please note: it's not good, it's retarded. |
Exotica (Atom Egoyan, 1994) - starring Mia Kershner and (ladies, check this woman out)...Arsinee Khanjian(who is atom egoyan's real life wife)....Ok, now you might be thinking if you've already seen this "this girl is sick, the movie's twisted!" But i bet secretly, some of you would want to invest in an exotic strip club (maybe without a dancing catholic schoolgirl routine...maybe not:)...or it might just make you want to date the club's owner, played by Arsinee...She puts on this edge to all of her films (personally, she makes me go crazy), and i think there's something very sexy about a pregnant woman passionately kissing a younger one...check this one out, however, egoyan is a master when it comes to the senses, and the mind....many don't like the way he carves into the system, but on a superficial level--EXOTICA has some really
neat stuff to look at..(then again, so does SHOWGIRLS)! HA!Amy |
| F3 - Frantic Frustrated Female (1995) - This Anime sexcapade series (3 parts so far) feature the plight of poor Hiroe, a "physically perfect" teenage girl with one very frustrating malady; she can't come. Her boyfriend is clueless but, luckily, she has plenty of female friends to help her with her little problem. In Part 1 it's her older sister-ish house mate Mayaka who tries a series of experiments. Part 2 turns into an all-out sex-o-rama when Takami, "a well known lesbian", brings over a group of schoolgirls to assist Hiroe in her quest for an orgasm. Part 3 picks up where Part 2 left off. After the orgy, Hiroe becomes possessed by a male demon. An "exorcist" is called in and things get completely insane. Funny and sexy! |
Faster, Pussycat, Kill! Kill! (1965) - Russ Meyer's ode to violent women is pure perfection. Three go-go dancers, two of them dykes and the other "AM and FM", race their sports cars out to the desert in search of kicks, led by mean mama Varla (Tura Satana). After a murder and a kidnapping they tangle with a family of desert rats in an attempt to steal a crazy old man's money; "enough to buy us a lot of swingin' miles," as Varla says. Great dialog, great theme song, and Tura Satana - genius! |
Female
Perversions (1997) - This film is a strongly aesthetic foray into the neurotic world of an aspiring judge, who happens to be the world's bitchiest lipstick lesbo on the side. Played by Tilda Swinton (Orlando), this is a character we love, we hate, we are intensely weirded out by. This film includes my favorite lesbian sex scene and sweeps the Weird Lesbian-Symbolic-Fetishistic Dream category for sure. Look for great performances from the entire cast, including Uncle Buck's Amy Madigan as the (hetero, but equally strange) sister and the mom from Titanic as (surprise!) an adorable, trashy small-town stripper.
Erika L. Lorshbough |
Fire (1997) - An East Indian "slice of life" where two women married to unworthy brothers find the emmotional/physical comforts missed in each other. The younger, gorgeous woman shows her elder sister in law how fullfilling life can be. Well acted with some pretty tender scenes. Go see why traditional Indianshad been rioting and tearing down the theaters where the film once played. It's been banned in India.

Flaming Ears - very obscure, I think... at least, no one I've ever met has heard of it. It looked early-nineties, independent, and completely froggin' _wack_.
It's in German. In the opening scene, a chick wrapped in your standard
post-apocalypse tight'n'squeaky rubber suit breaks into an abandoned
warehouse, cracks open a bottle of gasoline, slathers it over what must be
considered an unusually tantalizing plywood table, lights it, and starts
makin' wild whoopie with a hunka hunka burnin' furniture. Delightful.
Eventually you wind up meeting Nun, a nicely vacant butchy ass-whomper who
dines on dead rat, is a philandering necrophiliac (well, at least her
living girlfriend gets jealous), and gets turned into a life-size
cardboard cutout at the end of the movie. There's lots of strange
dialogue and raunchy raunchy scenes... some of them more odd than sexy.
But nearly all the chicks in it (which is nearly all the cast) are butched
out in that special German Babe way. Um... I don't know if there was a
moral -- this isn't your most edifying deluxodyke science fiction
weirdfest, but they seemed to know what they were doing. So I duggit. Mirabai |
![]() Forbidden Love: The Unashamed Stories of Lesbian Lives (1992) It's a fun documentary about lesbians in the 50s. It interviews senior lesbians about their lives as dykes in the 50s and intertwines the interviews with an ongoing short fictional drama of a beautiful butch-femme couple as well as hilarious stills of 50s lesbian pulp fiction novel covers. I highly recommend it. Chiclet |
![]() Foxes (1980) - Jodie Foster plays a tough teen, the only sensible one in her girl gang (which includes Cherie Currie of "The Runaways"). While her gal pals obsess over various boys, she's mysteriously content to be alone. Gotta love Jodie in her white painter's pants. Shane |
Foxfire (1996) -
In this film, the stunning Angelina Jolie (yum!) befriends a group of high school girls and incites them to revenge upon a lecherous teacher. Many escapades ensue, including a scene in which Angelina's character gives all the girls tattoos on their breasts. Sparks
fly between the sexually ambiguous characters, leading up to a delicious kiss between Angelina and the cute, spunky sister from the show Boston Common.
Erika L. Lorshbough
foxfire: two words Loved It!!!. this is the greatest story of lost souls i have ever seen! Angelina of course is a great actress in this. gritty, raw, and honest. i could watch this movie 100 times!!! just one question though. do you know where i can find this movie. i caught it on lifetime a couplw of weeks ago, alas the video stores have NADA of this movie. Crazbaby Foxfire - starring Angelina Jolie, based on the Joyce Carol Oates book, I think. OK, so big bad lesbian comes to town, wears black/black leather for the duration of her sojourn in Hicksville, forms girl gang that beats up sexually molesting teacher, and tattoos her female friends' tits while partially succeeding in seducing the protagonist who never forgets her. Grrr rating is high. Angelina Jolie is tasty. Female bonding (innocent) abounds. Evil men/boyfriends suffer vengeance. gePPy I believe the Unrated version of Angelina Jolie's "Foxfire" contains the lesbian relationship of the story. It is with her real life lover (Asian) at that time. sleepy |
Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) - Alright so we know that the lesbian element of the book has been hidden in the film version, but has anyone else noticed that in the scene when Ruth dies, across the brass bed head someone has written 'DYKES' it is just visible if
you look closely. Regardless of that the film is a good bit of sloppy entertainment which I thoroughly recommend to anyone. Mary Stuart Masterson is just a wonderful bonus. Tinks. |
|
Frida (2002) - Iif frida kahlo's paintings are up your alley then you have to see Selma Hayek 'do' Frida.
so, she's married to this fat old (in her words) 'toad' of a man who gets all the artistic kudos for his big fat YMCA-wall 'murals' and who prides himself on fucking other women as often as he takes a piss... but frida nonetheless manages to get up to lots more interesting stuff - cross dressing for her family photos, seducing parisian nightclub singers and new york broads, and doing a woman-on-woman tango that will have you slipping off your seat and melting to the floor. maybe tango's not the technical term, but that was shudderingly good. the women come across as facets of her passion, but it is the pain of the two catastrophes in her life (a trolley-car accident, and Diego) which define the frida we find in her paintings, and this film. h.robert |
Fucking Åmål AKA Show Me Love (1998) - I noticed you haven't listed the best lezzie movie to come out in a long time. What I'm talking about is "Fucking Åmål" It's about a 14-year old lipstick and 16-year old little dyke, who hit it off in the middle of no-where in Sweden. It's full of teen-age angst, drinking and problems but I loved it anyway! Official website in Swedish - http://www.sf.se/premiar/fucking_amal/. Hilkka |
Gia (1998, HBO). Angelina Jolie is phenomenal as Gia Carangi, the lesbian,
drug-addicted model who dies of AIDS in 1986. Gia's rise in the modeling world
was nothing less than meteoric and her crash all the more shattering.
Angelina, with effortless ability, juggles the many sides of Gia: the trash-
talking, switchblade carrying butch, the attentive lover, the scared little
girl, the dying AIDS patient. She is in nearly every scene, and you will be
wishing for more as the credits roll. Her main love interest is Linda, played
by Elizabeth Mitchell, and the sex scenes between them burn up the screen.
(Make sure you rent the Unrated version for more skin). Supporting cast
includes Mercedes Reuhl and Faye Dunaway. I highly recommend this movie. Sue
Gia. Mid-'90s, starring Angelina Jolie. I valiantly strive not to 'have a thing for' Angelina Jolie, who is Jon Voight's daughter FYI, but I couldn't resist checking out this movie about the first supermodel (the eponymous Gia) who is also a big punky dyke! (tattoos, leather, black clothing, spiky hair, attitude, etc.) Since it combines fashion, New York City, and many sex scenes between Jolie and her girlfriend, I was pretty satisfied. Plus there were (I think pseudo-) interviews with people who knew Gia, and sadly, a lot of footage about her struggle with AIDS and drugs. But until her plummet, Gia conquers all, makes big money, and even steals her main (there are others) womyn from a man. The box didn't play up Gia's homosexuality at all, but fear not, it will be all over the flick. gePPy |
| Girl, Interrupted (2000) -
When I saw the trailer of "Girl interrupted", all I could remember was the
gorgeous girl "with the lips" (I didn't know her name (Angelina Jolie) then).
That was the reason for me to go and see the film 3 times. Her cool, dykish
character had me captured in the movie and there's even a scene where Winona
Ryder's character reaches over to Jolie's character to give her a kiss. In my
opinion, this was one of those films with "hidden" gay content. I loved it! Andie |
Heavenly Creatures (1994) -
This film, set in 1950's New Zealand, is a must-see for any fans of Titanic's Kate Winslet. In it her character meets that of Melanie Linsky (Ever After) and these two repressed schoolgirls develop something of an 'unhealthy' friendship. A low-budget, foreign-made film, this one is a favorite of everyone I know who has seen it. A particular fave is the scene in which Melanie Linsky's character is forced to undergo a psychiatric evaluation and daydreams the shrink's bloody demise while being deemed a "ho..ho..homosexual". Campy, grisly fun. Erika L. Lorshbough
Heavenly Creatures Two girls (played by Mel Lynsky and Kate Winslet) with an active fantasy life fall in love - their parents (worried the girls might be exhibiting "homosexual" tendencies) decide its best to separate them. Tragedy ensues. It's based on a true story and set of diaries that created quite a scandal in New Zealand. Makes you go "mrrr!" a lot too. Minor sexual content and scenes of violence. -sphinx |
The Heroic Trio (1992) - Anita Mui is Wonder Woman , Maggie Cheung is
Thief Catcher, and Michelle Yeoh is Ching, the Invisible Girl in this futuristic fantasy.
The plot involves an evil eunuch who is kidnapping baby boys to groom as the new imperial family of China, and a scientist who has invented a cloak of invisibility. Outrageous, melodramatic, campy, with great special effects, and the women are fierce.
Heroic Trio Look for some tasty interactions between Michelle Yeoh and Anita Mui in the beginning (hospital scene)...Aside from the fact that they, unknowingly, are sisters in the film, man do they turn on my gaydar. Follow Michelle Yeoh's sexually ambiguous character in the next film HEROIC TRIO 2 aka THE EXECUTIONERS....it's fun...and Yeoh is still single! Amy |
High Art (1998) -
Seldom has subtlety spoken so fiercely as within Lisa Cholodenko's 1998
drama High Art.
Syd (Radha Mitchell), assistant editor of a prestigious art magazine, encounters legendary photographer Lucy Berliner (Ally Sheedy) by chance upon taking an annoying little plumbing matter into her own hands. Yet, little is Syd prepared for the whirlwind of passion, art and, yes, heroine that resides at the core of Lucy's world. Although the film possesses an undeniable - not to mention irresistible - lesbian dynamic, High Art proves far from two-dimensional as issues such as artistic integrity and addiction are explored just as deeply as the relationships developing (and destructing) at the center of the drama. Nevertheless, beyond the apparent plot, it is the more esoteric of motifs that provides the film's truly enduring impact, for the essence of High Art lies profoundly within the moment - as eternal as it is fleeting, as tragic as it is beautiful. - Cassandra Snow High Art (1998) - Great theme, had me thinking about the movie for days after seeing it, very realistic portrayal of drug life. Kim |
| Holy Weapon (1993) - I'd be hard pressed to name anything that beats this comedy for sheer jaw-dropping idiocy. Michelle Yeoh plays a woman whose fiance takes a super drug to help him defeat a Japanese swordsman. The side effect is he is driven to carry on with other women right in front of her. She gets even by burning his house down and becoming a "killer of heartless men." She meets up with the evil spider woman, who falls in love with her, and thinks she's a man (a likely story). Later, spider woman finds out the Michelle Yeoh character is a woman and still loves her. At the end they wind up together, sort of. A guilty pleasure; retarded beyond words. |
If These Walls Could Talk II (1999) This move was followed the lives of three different generations of lesbians, but there did not seem to be a connection between any of them. The first story features Vanessa Redgrave as an elderly lesbian who has just lost her partner. She has to deal with property issues and her partner's (quite horrid) family, all while retaining that "lesbian secret." The second story features Michelle Williams as a college dyke feminista who falls for Chloe Sevigny, a transgender boy. She gets shit from her feminist friends. End of story. The last story features Ellen Degeneres and Sharon Stone as a sort of post-modern yuppie lesbian couple who want a child. If this film is trying to promote adoption and queer family rights, it certainly doesn't do anything
for it. They shop around for sperm donors like they would shop for a pair of drapes. I thought the movie was very stereotypical and each story ended too quickly, but the sex scene between Sevigny and Williams (from Dawson's Creek, no less!) was enough reason not to veto it entirely. -KM

The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love - It was a cute little indie flick and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I don't remember names but basically, cute little butch dyke falls for this preppy pretty girl and they have a little fling and fall in love. The little butch girl lives with her "alternative family". Also, interacial relationship between the two girls. It really is a movie worth watching!! Jen |
Irma Vep (1997) -
ok fans, this is one of the best films out of france, period..i know, it's
a bold statement, but the whole beautiful idea behind it (yes, besides the
pure aesthetics) is fucking genius...it stars HK superstar MAGGIE CHEUNG,
as...herself! Maggie plays Maggie in this story of a french filmmaker's
obsession with old, serial french cinema and this more-or-less B+ actress
from HK, who speaks not a word of french, and doesn't even do her own
stunts, like her co-stars...look for a superb NUDE cameo of once mentioned
ARSINEE KHANJIAN (EXOTICA, SPEAKING PARTS, every EGOYAN film), and a very
sweet, lezzie frenchy no-name who plays the part of the costume
designer....This movie was rated horribly in mainstream US papers, which
should tell you something.....it's a true work of art, with all-too-many
themes...basically, it was just telling the critics "go ahead and give me 2
thumbs down cuz i KNOW you won't get me!" Amy |
![]() Don't forget I've Heard the Mermaids Singing, Canadian flick that I believe was done by the same producer as When Night is Falling. Late 80's...funny sushi scene! Bighair |
![]() Jaded (1996) , Jaded was a pretty cool lesbian film. The only star I remember is Gina Gershon. It is about these two women ( one lesbo and one bi, who has abusive man at home) who decide to rape a straight woman on a beach. No one believes the straight one of course, but.... well, just rent it to find out what happens. Tiffany ...about Jaded....thought I should mention that the film does not star Gina Gershon. The stars of the film is Carla Gugino (now best known for her roles in Snake Eyes and Spy Kids). The film does have lesbianism in it, however the film is actually about what happens to a woman (Gugino) after she is raped by two other women. The films cover makes it look like it is going to be an erotic tale of sex between women, however after immediately beginning the movie lets you know right away that you are definitely in for something different. Rya Kihlstedt and Anna Devine play the "rapists." Rya is married in real life to actor Gil Bellows (formerly Billy on Ally McBeal). The film also stars Christopher McDonald and Aida Turturro. The Killing of Sister George (1968) - George (Beryl Reid) is an old-ish alcoholic butch soap opera star. Childie (Susanna York) is her younger femme girlfriend. When Childie's a bad girl she has to chow down on George's cigar butt. George's world is falling apart cause she's too butch, too obnoxious, and too drunk to be accommodated by her employers anymore. Her character is rumored to be getting the axe. What's more,
that bitchy BBC official (Coral Browne), is putting the moves on Childie. The climactic love scene features conversation with baby dolls and scary horror movie music. This could send you screaming back to the closet. Just kidding; it's fab. |
The King (1968) - "Are you a queen or are you a king? Or, like me, an in-between thing?" intones the narrator in a long, silly poem accompanied by a wild bongo track. This movie is another no-budget retard fest unearthed by Something Weird video. Where do they find this stuff? This movie is so funny. Just three girls taking their clothes off and sometimes pretending to do something that vaguely resembles sex, while the narrator babbles non-stop. "I couldn't wait to get to Cherry Grove, yes Cherry Grove - the men with men and the women with women. Cherry Grove..." she blabs, while the girls are shown getting on the Staten Island Ferry. Later, she goes on and on about the fantastic beach house while the girls are shown taking the lid off the tiny bathtub in the kitchen of an old style East Village apartment. "A luxurious bathtub made for three. I freed my breasts from the confines of my bra, then removed my underpants." Loved it. |
Liquid Sky (1982) - A new wave nightmare about punk models, sex, heroin, and aliens. It features wacky makeup effects and dreadful dialog. The main character's lezzy lover is a surly punkette who says things like, "My pussy is lethal" and does a number called "Me and My Rhythm Box." She wears one of those black sleep masks as a headband. Later she drops dead while having an orgasm. You might wish the whole cast would follow, but there are actually a lot of people who really love this movie. It portrays a New York that never existed, (thank god.) After all these years it's kinda funny. |
Lethal Weapon - I personally think that the auteur-ish "Lethal Weapon" movies are a secret tale of butch/femme passion--and, NO, it's Danny Glover that's the femme.--Lisa |
| Little Darlings (1979) - Kristy McNichol (city girl in jean jacket who smokes) and Tatum O'Neal (rich girl from broken home) star as bunkmates at Summer Camp, competing to lose their virginity (with a guy) after being called "dykes". I don't want to give away who wins, but she describes the experience as "not what i thought it'd be...god, i feel so lonesome." Plot sounds cheesier than it is. Added bonus: co-star Matt Dillon & Kristy Mc Nichol share identical haircuts and outfits! Shane |
Losing Chase (mid 90's) is a true-to-life movie for a lot of women in the same boat as me. It stars Kyra Sedgewick & Helen Miren. Helen's character is a married, confused and lost mother. After having a nervous breakdown, her husband hires a woman (Kyra) to live with them for the summer to help care for her and the children. Kyra has hidden problems of her own. The two women end up forming a strong connection. The best part for me was the build up and the emotional release of the feelings that were kept within each of them. It is a very realistic movie that shows the intimate bond that women share. Great scenery as well. I recommend this one.Adia |
Love and Other Catastropes Filmed on campus in Australia in 1996, the storyline follows a group of friends student lives and love problems in a day.2 of the main characters are lesbians, and they are both hot. Rhadha Mitchell, famous for her lesbian character Syd in High Art, yet again plays a lesbian in this film and she is just as adorable. Rent it girls, it's cute, funny, all the characters are unique and sweet in their own way. It also has a great soundtrack, and most importantly there are lots of lesbian scences. What I liked best about this movie is that the lesbians in the film are portrayed as ordinary and likeable as their straight counterparts in the movie. Nobody questions them, they are just there and they are cool. It's like the Austrailian version of Singles, although with lesbians. HeidiH |
