| Masturbation Memoirs (Vol III & IV) (1998) - Subtitled "An erotic guide to women's self-pleasuring." That means it's educational. Some San Francisco cuties sit around a kitchen table discussing masturbation; attitudes about it, methods and such. Later, each demonstrates her technique as the camera comes in good and close. When one of the girls wanks off to accordian oom-pah music while wearing a plush toy bra you won't know whether to laugh or crank up the vibrator. A House O' Chicks production, it's available through their web site. |
![]() Mercy (1999) - This straight to video thriller has Ellen Barkin looking for a murderer among well to do women who get together for kinky sex. The movie is stupid but the scenes of sexual tension between Barkin and Peta Wilson are HOT. Look for the "Extended International Edition" DVD. --C |
| Moment By Moment (1978) - Lily Tomlin and John Travolta in a hot romance?? Happened to catch this at a gay film fest about 12 years ago, before Travolta's regrettable comeback, and such a full house of shrieking fags and cackling dykes I have never seen before or since. This movie, about a rich middle-aged babe and her young boy-toy named Strip was written by Lily Tomlin's girlfriend, er, rather, "creative partner" Jane Wagner. What was she on? During the scene when Lily, sitting in her hot tub, flutters her eyelashes and sighs, "Oh Strip!" as Travolta drops his towel, the whole house went into such hysterics, some people were truly in tears. |
| Mystery's Choir (1999) - A hot art film with real lesbian sex by filmmaker Loan Do. For the horny at heart, you're not going to get cinematic expressions of lesbo's kissing like mannequins in this flick. Beware, although you'll probably want to burn a hole in your your pants during the show, this is a seriously
artistic film and is not for The Incredible Adventures of Two Girls in Love
fans! Yes, the above was written by the filmmaker. But this isn't. If you're looking for the antidote to the sweet little coming out story and the sweet little teen sexual awaking picture, this is it. It's kind of scary, kind of nutty, kind of like "Can She Bake a Cherry Pie?" except with lesbians and sex. |
Naked Killer (1992) - A big, over-the-top, exploitative piece of HK insanity. Features a woman who trains female killers by throwing them into her basement with violent geeks, a lesbian hit woman who's in love with another hit woman and spies on her through a telescope while having sex with her girlfriend, an impotent cop who throws up whenever he holds his gun, and so much more. In the lezzie sex scenes the girls are always wearing cotton gloves, I suppose so the actresses didn't have to actually touch each other. The subtitles, with lines like, "Bitch, I'll burst your tits!" and "I was unable to impulse, but yesterday I experienced Priapism," will have you rolling. |
| New Cutey Honey (1995) - An Anime adventure series with eight episodes. Lovely Warrior Cutey Honey is an android who fights evil in futuristic Cosplay City. She lives with a nutty family, including Grandpa Danbei, who has a plate in his head and makes a weapon out of his underwear. Wacky plots abound, some of them with lezzie overtones, but the main attraction is Honey herself. She frequently transforms, either for disguise or fighting purposes. Each time she does, she flies into the air and spins around till all her clothing spins off, then her new look spins onto her body. All this is accompanied by the cry, "Honey Flash!" |
Noir (Animated TV series 2001) - Chic French assassin, Mireille, receives a mysterious e-mail from Japanese schoolgirl Kirika, inviting her to "take a pilgrimage for the past with me." By the middle of the first episode these two are exchanging meaningful glances while dropping bodies left and right. Mireille decides to bring Kirika back to her Paris pad and take her on as a business partner. By the end of the first episode they're shacking up! Sweet, except Mireille keeps promising to kill Kirika as soon as they discover the secrets of their tragic pasts.
Between murder assignments the girls bond over a house plant, drink tea, or sometimes just sit on the bed together pointing guns at each other's faces. There is much eye acting and mood building with the gorgeous soundtrack. The main plot develops slowly until the middle of the series, when a wacky new murderer, Chloe, arrives and starts trying to bust up their relationship. Noir stretches suspension of disbelief to the limit but, surprisingly, it's quite the touching love story. Credit is due to the fantastic voice cast, especially Kotono Mitsuishi as Mireille. The art and animation are absolutely beautiful. Highly recommended! |
Peking Opera
Blues (1986) - OK ladies...kd lang is a beautiful dyke, no doubt, but imagine her as chinese goddess BRIGITTE LIN in a tuxedo (in 'male disguise') for 2 hours. seriously, they really look alike after you see this film. so brigitte got married in 1994, she's always in disguise, and plays the hottest man in asian cinema NUMEROUS TIMES!! c'mon brigitte...you're not fooling anyone:) this movie is funny--she does a little spyin' and lyin'....she's good at that???... Amy
Peking Opera Blues is one of my favorite movies too. Set in 1913 China, Brigitte plays the revolutionary daughter of a general, a character based on real-life cross-dressing revolutionary Qiu Jin. If there is such a thing as a completely satisfying movie experience, this is it. Gorgeous Brigitte Lin, dolled up in man drag, models a new suit in every scene! Move over Marlene Dietrich! Great performances from Sally Yeh, Cherie Chung and especially Brigitte, make this the best comedy/action/drama/political/women's film ever. Must see! |
| Perfect - with Jamie Lee Curtis and John Travolta, is a masterpiece of cinema in my opinion. Jamie, an aerobics instructor, wears a leotard and works out. 'nuff said. (There is a plot but I can't remember it right now.) Jujee |
| Revolutionary Girl Utena - The Movie (see Shoujo Kakumei Utena - Adolescence of Utena) |
| Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion 1997 Stars Lisa Kudrow and Mira
Sorvino. Okay, i don't know how many lesbians would agree with this, but i
thought this movie was very funny and very gay. It is about these two girls
who were nerds/best friends in high school, and they are still living
together when their 10 year reunion rolls around. They are the only people
in each other's lives, they go out to clubs together but refuse to dance
with anyone but each other. They make some kind of remark in the beginning
of the movie about how maybe they should become lesbians, but they decide
not to because they don't want to kiss. But i find it quite odd that they
go to the prom together, and there again refuse to dance with anyone but
each other. Their big fear is growing old without each other. The movie
makes fun of all the married people at the reunion and shows how crappy
their lives turned out to be. I don't know, maybe someone should get back
to me on this one, but I think this is one gay movie. (Even if it isn't
gay, it is still really funny.) Jerusha |
Run Lola Run (1999) - Over the weekend I saw a very cool German movie entitled "Run Lola Run." No, that's not its German title. It's about a Berlin urban hipster, Lola, with fiery red hair, whose boyfriend has just fucked up a major crime deal and owes 500,000 deutsche marks--in exactly 20 minutes. So she has to figure out how to get him that much
money as the clock ticks on...it's very postmodern, with cool animated moments, graphics, music, etc. It's a quite surprising, fun little movie. And Lola's so...oh! gePPy |
Score (1972) - A swinging male/female couple living in a make-believe seaside town (actually Dubrovnik), have a competition to see which of them can seduce their counterpart of another male/female couple. So husband goes to work on husband and wife goes to work on very dim-witted wife. These two have a groovy townhouse with lots of mod furnishings. They keep their pot in a pepper grinder and their poppers in a bullet
pendant. The dialog is fall-on-the-floor hilarious. When the guys get down, it's kind of hot. The girls, on the other hand, are kind of clueless. Directed by Radley Metzger. |
I'd like to add Serving in Silence -- The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story to the ranks of fantastic lesbo flicks. It's got everything you ever wanted, fabulous fashions (including uniforms), different & yet stimulating hatwear, as modelled by kooky, arty Judy Davis, and absolutely no sex. How refreshing! The only confusing bit is why on earth they cast Robin Williams as 'Mrs Doubtfire' in the Glenn Close part? Why? I thought Miss Close was a pretty good actress myself. I expect it's some sort of post-modern man as woman playing lesbian clever- clever thing. It's probably not a great movie choice if you're a lesbian thinking about joining the army, but for us civilians it's time well spent. Barb. England. |
Shoujo Kakumei Utena - Adolescence of Utena aka Revolutionary Girl Utena -- The Movie (1999) Yay! The world's craziest TV series has been followed up by an even crazier movie. Adolescence of Utena is surreal, trippy, and full of "what the fuck!?" moments. It's a complete oddity - a psychedelic lesbian love story. Since it tells an alternate version of the original story, you don't really need to have seen the series to appreciate it. The animation is stunning and dyke-wise, Utena and Anthy's relationship requires no imagination or decoding. For fans like me who felt sad for Utena at the end of the series, the end of this movie is sweet. Insane, but sweet. Any movie that equates "the power to revolutionize the world" with two nude girls rolling down the road on a recumbent motorcycle is my kind of movie. The VHS is dubbed in English. Haven't heard it yet, but get the DVD if you can cause Tomoko Kawakami and Yuriko Fuchizaki rock. |
| Show Me Love (see Fucking Åmål) |
So Close (2003) Shu Qi and Zhao Wei play a couple of assassin/computer
hacker sisters. Karen Mok plays a tough lady cop, hot on their trail. The three lovely stars pose around, flick their hair in slow motion, rip each other's tops, hang from the ceiling by their stiletto heels and so forth - as many faceless men in suits bite the fucking dust! Guns, swords, gravity defying kung fu, poison gas, whatever, these girls
have it covered. Adding to the fun is a cute lesbian subplot. Zhao Wei's character falls in love with Karen Mok's character and stalks her via satellite! Hey, I
didn't say any of this is plausible or makes sense. And no, the girls don't have sex or anything, but it's still cute. Loved it! |

An '80s--happy friend persuaded me to see Some Kind of Wonderful with her, one of those Hughes (?) comedies I just never saw. Starring some
random people, plus the actress who was Marty's mom in "Back to the Future"
and Mary Stuart Masterson. And picky, picky me adored this movie!
Masterson's tomboy drummer character runs around in tantalizing '80s garb
that evokes butchness (*dyke appeal factor here*) with a plainly aching
heart that just made me want to sweep her away and---ahem, yes, so it's a
very sweet and funny romantic comedy with a satisfying ending. Plus there
are enough glimpses of 1980s hair- and garment-styles to amuse the most
jaded of viewers--watch out for such classic '80s film staples as:
*the unrealistically cool party at the home of some kid whose parents are
away for the weekend *the girls' gym locker room where everyone spends hours grooming in matching lingerie sets *the outcasts are in possession of the coolest of any given item *class struggles/conflicts that would warm any Marxist's heart (recall "Pretty In Pink"'s searing social commentary) Have no shame, rent this one when you feel like curling up with your VCR, herbal tea and fuzzy slippers. gePPy |
| The Stranger (1995) -
Starring real-life, champion kick boxer Kathy Long as an avenging
angel/mystery woman who rides into an Arizona town on her motorcycle and
commences to wale on the vicious bikers who've taken over the town. You'll
love her leather outfit and deadpan one-liners like, "They messed with me,
so I killed them." Total revenge fantasy - thoroughly satisfying.
According to the Internet Movie Database, Kathy Long was Michelle Pfeiffer's stunt double in Batman Returns. (In that case, there were TWO reasons to see that film - Kathy and Michelle.) |
Tea with Mussolini (1999) - just out on video Joan Plowright, Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Cher, Lily Tomlin. Wartime Italy, based on actual events. Exemplary cast with Tomlin playing the butch archeoligist who dances with the girls, and does hand to hand combat with fascists and nazis! And they win! All this with the incredible scenery and actual artworks of Florence Italy.Nat |
| **Entertaining movie moment: I saw This Is My Father's Life or whatever
it's called (I was drinking that night) and at one point this American
adolescent boy is in Ireland, trying to be hip and get into an Irish social
event. He is rebuffed by 2 Irish lassies (how can I resist using this
word?) who tell that this dance is a "lesbo stomp" and not for him.
Hmmm...this could be a new dance step, the Lesbo Stomp. First, put on
clunky black shoes...next, drop smoldering cigarette to dance floor... gePPy |
| TIMECODE
...Makes you wanna have sex.... should be the tagline. I loved this film.
Going into it, I was just happy to know that my favorite actress had a
speaking part in it (none other than the great Holly Hunter), but just
minutes after watching this portrayal of everyday life told in a quadrant
(the screen is divided into 4 the entire picture), i saw things that
...excited me, woo hoo! Jeanne Tripplehorn and Salma Hayek having a lesbian
quarrel in the back of a limo was fun, Holly Hunter playing an executive
producer in tears, Glen Headley psycho-analyzing Saffron Burrows (great
newcomer to the screen--did you see DEEP BLUE SEA, and if you did, admit it,
you know you loved it)! The film is just plain mixed nuts. It's good. It
has Mike Figgis appeal, it was made cheap, and it's damn creative. See it
today, and look for some other screen favorites. This film is loaded! Amy |
Times Square (1980) - Said to be inspired by Beth and Scott B's super 8 punk serial "The Offenders," this is a thinly veiled romance between two teen girls. A punk girl and the daughter of a politician meet in a mental hospital. They bust out and run away to Times Square where punky takes the stage name Aggie Doo and begins a career as a rock star with tunes like, "Feed me, I'm a damn dog." Meanwhile, femmy gets a job as a non-topless dancer in a topless joint. Her debut is met with shouts of, "Oh yeah! Classy!" from the guys, who are apparently delighted at the sight of a go-go girl who keeps her clothes on. The gals call themselves the Sleaze Sisters and elude capture while underground radio DJ Tim Curry promotes them and brings them fame. He calls on all the punkers to come down to The Deuce wearing their funkiest trash bag gowns for a Sleaze Sisters gig atop a theater marquee. Doggie, I mean Aggie Doo throws emotional tantrums and frequent fits of high dyke drama. It's all so wrong and such a hoot. |
2 CULT CLASSICS:
Therese and Isabelle (1968), and Ghost in the Shell (1994) - 2 completely different stories, but i think would make a cool double
feature, in no specific order. normally i would suggest a cartoon after a
heavy, pretty depressing story about 2 schoolgirls who find forbidden love
in the 60's in catholic school, and eventually...well...i won't tell you
the end, but this is pretty much a lezzie movie staple, if you haven't seen
it already...basically, it's pretty "out there" for it's time, even though
it takes quite the negative glance on homosexuality (as did/do most gay and
lesbian films do that are designed for the masses)...
Ghost in the Shell
for anime fans, is just a bad ass movie about a no b.s. android and her
mind....i recommend this, not necessarily because of the main character's
coolness, but because this is probably one of the most intelligent japanese
cartoons ever made, and it's under 80 minutes..from the same makers of
AKIRA (1988), comes a story about how the end of natural reproduction and
influx of computerized beings will depress the earth, not just in
japan...that is...if all of that shit could happen.....the soundtrack is
beautiful, and the artwork is precision.....of course....the japanese just
can't bring themselves to give their naked female characters pubic hair, or
a clitoris.....look out barbie! Amy |
The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988 )172min. Stars Daniel Day Lewis as a doctor and Juliette Binoche (Blue, The English Patient) as his devoted wife. He keeps cheating on her and she knows it, but she never leaves him. The cool part of the movie is when she goes and gets it on with the woman he has been having an affair with. Pretty good stuff if you ask me. Jerusha |
| Unholy Rollers (1972) aka Leader of the Pack -- I loved this obscure roller-derby drama starring Claudia Jennings as a hell-raising roller derby star who won't play by the rules - even her own team's. The film's bare-bones unpretentiousness lets you slip right into its world... (Was that really Martin Scorsese in the editing room? Yes, it's true.) Popcorn-throwing fun. As far as I can tell, it's not available on video, but you might catch it on cable. Ruby2zday |
The Watermelon Woman (1996) - An entertaining mockumentary from Cheryl Dunye about a Philly video store clerk's obsession with The Watermelon Woman, a fictional black actress from the 40's. Cheryl plays herself basically, but as a first time filmmaker working on a documentary about this actress. She skillfully blends phony archival footage with bits in which she interviews people about the fictional actress. Sometimes it's hard to know which people are in on the joke. For example, nutsy Camille Paglia nearly steals the show in her hilarious interview segment. Was she being funny or just herself?Interwoven into the fake documentary is some dyke drama, or maybe, more accurately, film as therapy. It seems Cheryl has some "issues" she likes to work out in her films, especially the issue of white women who exclusively date black women. In this film, as in her short "Greetings from Africa," she casts a good looking woman for her to do sex scenes with. Shades of Woody Allen! (Except Cheryl's cute.) Let's hope she keeps working on this issue and that she will continue to get naked in all future films. |
When Night Is Falling - Canadian movie, I'd say mid-/early '90s. With nobody famous. College professor meets exotic, amazingly sexy circus performer--but aforementioned professor is engaged to a Christian man, emphasis on Christian. When I say sexy circus, I mean that this woman puts on a full-body skintight leather outfit complete with a mothafuckin *hood* and does a playful act in which she "juggles" a beam of light--her shadow
being projected onto a large screen. And the sex scenes between the ladies
are great--better than "Bound"! All kinds of nudity! (I can't believe this
is Canadian...) The central conflict is the professor's budding awareness
that she's well gulp... swallow...not hetero...and the choices she must
make--which partner, which life. I don't want to give away the ending but
would YOU forsake a talented, loving woman with a stunning wardrobe and
bod for a hirsute Christian boyfriend??! gePPy |
Creature Double Feature:
Wild Things (1997) and Wild Side
(1995) -
Wild Things is a must-see for anyone who loves high camp thrillers.
Check out the femme-on-femme action (sex, catfights, and more sex)
between uncommonly sizzling Neve Campbell and "Doogie Howser"
graduate/babe-come-lately Denise Richards. You get Denise spending
most of the movie in her bra, some Matt Dillon muscle, full-frontal
Kevin Bacon sporting a bit of a chubby, and, oddly, music by George
Clinton...all in one movie that's more substantial than you might
expect. John McNaughton (dir. 1990's Henry: Portrait of a Serial
Killer) cut out a guy/guy shower scene between Bacon and Dillon
because he thought it "gratuitous." Given that everything in this
movie is gratuitous --and given how gayboy the two look on the movie's
official website-- boy/boy booty could only have added another plus to
this already-fun hour-and-45. An interview with McNaughton on the
movie's official website reveals, "McNaughton says he liked Neve
Campbell immediately when he met her, but she was concerned with the
nudity and lesbian love scenes involved with the role of the doped up
Suzie Toller. 'We wanted Neve, but it didn't look like it was going to
happen because of her concerns. But it did, and she is very easy to
deal with and down to earth.'" Neve does seem like she's going
through the motions, but she's so fine you might not care.
A slow-moving and cheesy but lovable movie, Wild Side stars a pre-out
Anne Heche as a banker by day, high-priced ho by night, Christopher
"Rectal Wristwatch" Walken as a felonious john, Steven Bauer as his
spying chauffeur (you might remember him playing yet another skeezy
role in Primal Fear), and a certifiably yummy Joan Chen as Walken's
fall guy. Girl/girl highlights include an afternoon of sweet and
tasteful lesbian lovemaking, complete with waves crashing in the
background. Unfortunately, in the love scenes, Anne seems afraid to
really touch Joan; fortunately, Joan doesn't seem to share the
hesitancy. We can guess that things may have changed for Anne since
1995: watch out for her asking a friend, "Do I look like I have
tendencies?" The hour-and-a-half film highlight for sure is Walken's
attempted Bauer butt-pirating in Heche's honor and his ensuing spacy
"I'm out there...where every man wants to be" mini-monologue. Butches:
don't take fashion tips from Walken's character, who pairs Hawaiian
shirts with silk dressing gowns. Chaia |
Wing Chun (1994) - Michelle Yeoh stars in this comedic biopic about the legendary 17th century kung-fu heroine. Yim Wing Chun traipses around in man drag, provoking snide remarks from small-minded, small-town people, but it doesn't bother her any. She's too busy defending her Aunt Fong's tofu shack from bandits. When one kung-fu master comes around to put her in her place, she kicks his ass- while balancing a tray of tofu. Things get complicated when she rescues ultra-femme widow Charmy from selling herself into slavery. Aunt Fong puts Charmy to work as the "Tofu Beauty," and the men line up to drool over her, while glancing enviously at Wing Chun. Mistaken identity, slapstick humor, and spectacular fight scenes ensue. Michelle Yeoh rules! |
